How Technology Has Changed Our Culture

I don’t know about you, but I have noticed a big difference between the way I was raised, and the way young people today are raised. When I was younger, I played outside most of the time during the summer. During the school year I watched TV and did homework. I didn’t even know what a computer was. I certainly didn’t have a cell phone. Texting? We wrote notes on a piece of paper. And we wrote in plain english. Had an English paper to write? Paper or a typewriter was used, which used paper of course. It wasn’t until High School that we used computers for writing papers. Then again, I went to high school before the days of Windows XP and Windows Vista. I wonder what other people my age, 26, experienced when they were growing up.

If I needed to look up some information, I had to get an encyclopedia or dictionary. Or I had to go to the library. I would be surprised if today’s kids even know what an encyclopedia is. We have the Internet, we have wikipedia and wiki answers. If we want to talk to someone, we don’t use the phone anymore, we text, email, or chat with yahoo IM or AIM. Technology has spoiled us. We can use our computer for a lot of things these days.

Take music for example. Instead of going to the store and buying a cassette, we can go on iTunes, download the music, either albums or individual songs, then put them on our mp3 player or cell phone and listen everywhere we go. No more big boomboxes or bulky CD and casette players. Which were limited to the amount of music they could hold.

Technology really has changed the way everything works. From our information gathering, to our music, to our cars. Every car manufactured today is useless without the microprocessor that makes its systems function properly.

There is so much that has been affected by technology, it’s impossible to mention it all in one post. If you have a story to share or something you would like to add, leave a comment below and get the conversation started. I left his post open-ended and short on purpose. To encourage participation. Therefore, how has technology changed your life?
